1. SYNTHETIC PHONICS - NEW WEBSITE AND FORUM

Synthetic Phonics methods are especially effective for all dyslexic children who are learning to read and spell. After successful trials in Scotland, this teaching method is strongly recommended by the US and UK governments for use in all schools. The new 'Synthetic Phonics' website provides information and resources for teachers, classroom assistants and parents, and is an important resource for everyone working with dyslexic children.

We have also launched a new Synthetic Phonics Discussion Forum on the website.

Participants have started to read entire books for the first time, have gone back to school and graduated.

3. USING THE GOLDEN RULE FOR READING

I have been using the 'Golden Rule' with my student. When my student reads aloud to me, I always tell him the words he struggles with.

At the beginning, before I applied this rule, he hated to read aloud. He has actually begun to enjoy our reading time, now that he knows it is not threatening, that he will not have to struggle to sound out words, or get upset because he forgot what he was reading because he spent so long figuring out a word.

It has taken the stress out of reading aloud and shown him that reading can be fun. He no longer gets anxious when I call him aside to read. He has also recently begun to volunteer when we are reading our novel studies as a group. He knows that I will help him if he gets stuck. Now that the stress has been removed, his reading abilities are improving. He has stopped saying "I can't" and is trying. (E.S., Switzerland)

6. HELPING DYSLEXIC POLICE RECRUITS @@

In police recruit training we have found that CDs of the course material may assist dyslexic students in processing a large input in a pressured situation. There is an expectation that statements will be handwritten, which causes concern, but encouraging the use of a word processor to set it out first, greatly relaxes students and helps them to develop. I am sure that there will be increased use of a typed facility to take statements in future, which will really help officers with dyslexia. New entrants to the service are sometimes very reluctant to ask for reasonable adjustment and declare themselves as dyslexic, fearing this may prejudice, or even end, their employment in the service. The sense of relief such a person will often express when discovering that this is not so and there are ways they can be helped, is often quite moving and makes my role worthwhile. (T.T., Devon, UK, who works with dyslexic adults doing police training.)

16. MAKING PHONIC GAMES

After looking through L.R.’s literacy book, I identified that his teacher was focusing on words containing the sound “ou” and these were giving L.R. particular trouble. To give him practice in recognising this sound, I made cards showing the following words: loud; cloud; found; ground; sound; out; our; shout and proud. We looked at the words together then I asked him for each word. He managed this fairly easily although hesitated between “out” and “our” because of their similarity. He then tried to read the words himself - L.R. enjoys playing games and was keen to try to win this one! He managed to read several including 'shout', 'out' and 'loud' and tried very hard to work the others out. His attempts indicated that he was remembering the “ou” sound quite well but still needed more work on blending all the sounds together. He was keen to play the game again the next time and was more confident in recognising the sound. (V.Y., Lancashire, UK)
